Weighted Grade Calculator - CalcHub

Weighted Grade Calculator

Calculate your course grade by combining tests, homework, projects, and quizzes with custom weights.

How this weighted grade calculator works

Enter each course component with points earned, points possible, and weight percentage. The calculator converts each score to a percentage, applies the weight, and combines the results into a weighted course grade.

Course Components

Add assignments, tests, quizzes, labs, or projects.

Weights can total less than 100% if you only want to calculate your grade so far. For a full final-grade result, your course weights should add up to exactly 100%.

How to Use

  1. Add each course component:Create one row for homework, quizzes, tests, labs, participation, or projects.
  2. Enter points earned and possible:The calculator converts each item into a percentage automatically.
  3. Enter the weight:Add the course weight for that component, such as 15%, 25%, or 40%.
  4. Calculate:The tool combines all weighted contributions and shows both your grade on entered work and your total course points earned so far.

Formula Used

A weighted grade gives more importance to some parts of a class than others. Calculate a weighted grade by multiplying each assignment score by its weight, then summing the results:Final Grade = (score₁ × weight₁) + (score₂ × weight₂). For example,80 × 0.40 + 90 × 0.60 = 86%. Ensure all weights total1.00or100%for accuracy.

Weighted Contribution = (Earned ÷ Possible) × Weight

Add all contributions together to get course points earned. If your entered weights total less than 100%, the calculator also shows your current grade across the work entered so far.

Why Weighted Grades Matter

Weighted grading reflects how most real classes are structured. A final exam might count much more than a quiz, and a major project may matter more than daily homework. Using weights helps your grade match the actual rules in your syllabus.

This also makes it easier to plan ahead. Once you know how much each category affects your course, you can see where improvement will have the biggest impact. A weighted grade calculator is especially useful when you have partial grades and want to understand where you stand before the term is complete.

Quick Tip:

If your entered weights do not total 100%, focus on the “Grade on Entered Work” result for your current standing, and use “Course Points Earned” to see how much of the full class grade you have already secured.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a weighted grade in a class?

A weighted grade is a course grade in which each assignment or category counts for a different percentage of the final total. For example, an exam may be worth more than homework, and a major project or quiz category may carry more weight in the class than smaller tasks.

Do my course weights need to add up to 100%?

For a full final-grade calculation, yes. Your syllabus usually defines category weights that should total 100% for the most accurate result. If you are only entering completed work so far, the total can be less than 100%, and the calculator will still show your current grade across the weight entered.

Can I use a percentage score instead of raw points?

Yes. You can enter a percentage score as earned points out of 100 possible points. For example, if an assignment result was 88%, just enter 88 earned and 100 possible, and the calculator will treat it the same way.

What if only part of my course has been graded so far?

If only part of the course is graded, enter the categories you already have, such as homework, quiz, exam, or project scores. The calculator will show your grade on the entered work, your current average, and how much course weight remains ungraded.

Can I include extra credit?

Yes. If a category allows extra credit, you can enter earned points greater than the possible points. The weighted grade calculator will reflect that higher percentage in the final result using the same formula as every other category.

What is the difference between course points earned and current grade?

Course points earned show how much of the total course grade you have secured so far. Current grade shows how well you are doing only across the components you entered as a student. These values are the same when your weights total 100%, but they differ when only part of the class has been graded.
