How this stride length calculator works

A stride length calculator estimates the distance covered during one full stride, typically from one foot's contact to the next contact of the same foot. Calculate stride length using distance traveled and the number of strides. Stride length varies with height, walking or running speed, terrain, and individual biomechanics.

Because consumer devices usually report a single step under the same name, this tool works from either input and shows both figures side by side: one step, and the full gait cycle that contains two of them. D is the distance walked and N is the number of steps counted. This is the most reliable method because it uses your own gait rather than a population average.

S = k × H × a

k is about 0.415 for men and 0.413 for women, H is height, and a is the movement multiplier for brisk walking, jogging, or running.

One gait cycle contains two steps, so a full stride is double the single-step figure. Reverse the first formula to get the steps needed for any distance.

Speed from cadence

v = cadence × S

Walking or running speed is step rate multiplied by step length, which is why going faster means turning the legs over quicker, reaching further, or both.

Step, stride, cadence, and step width

Step length

Heel strike of one foot to heel strike of the opposite foot. This is the distance most trackers, pedometers, and everyday articles mean when they say "stride".

Stride length

One complete gait cycle: heel strike of one foot to the next heel strike of the same foot. Two steps, so roughly double the single-step figure.

Cadence

Steps per minute. Multiply cadence by step length and you get speed, which is why two runners at the same pace can move very differently.

Step width

Side-to-side distance between the feet, typically a few centimetres. It affects stability and is measured separately from any length figure here.

How to measure your stride length properly

Ten minutes with a tape measure beats any height formula. The goal is a steady, representative pace over a known distance, repeated enough times that a miscount does not decide the answer.

1. Mark the course

Use a flat, straight stretch of a known length — 20 m, 30 m, or 100 ft. A running track lane or a marked path removes the measuring error entirely.

2. Walk it normally

Start walking several paces before the line so you are already at pace. Count every footfall, both feet, and include the final one as you cross the end.

3. Repeat and average

Do three passes and average the step counts before dividing. If you want a running figure, repeat the whole process at running pace — the two are not interchangeable.

Interpret the result carefully

Longer is not automatically better. Deliberately overreaching to lengthen your step can change how you land and load your joints; runners usually adjust cadence and let step length follow.

Check which definition is in play. A device reporting "stride" may mean one step. Comparing a single step with a gait cycle makes any result look wrong by a factor of two.

Height formulas are population averages. Two people of identical height can have noticeably different leg lengths and habitual paces.

One walking figure will not fit everything. Trails, treadmills, running, hills, and carrying a load each deserve their own measurement if the distance matters.
