Chandelier Size & Placement Calculator

Chandelier Size Calculator

Use professional interior design rules to find the ideal diameter, height, and hanging position for your next light fixture.

How chandelier sizing works

Interior designers follow a simple "inch-for-foot" rule:the sum of your room's length and width in feet should equal the chandelier's diameter in inches. For placement over tables, the fixture should typically be 1/2 to 2/3 the width of the table surface.

Calculate chandelier size by adding room length and width in feet, then convert that sum to inches. Use that number as the chandelier diameter. For example,a 12 ft by 14 ft room needs a 26-inch chandelier. Hang it 30–36 inches above tables or 7 feet above floors.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Choose Measurement Unit:Select Imperial (Feet/Inches) or Metric (Meters/CM).
  2. Select Placement:Is the chandelier going in the center of a room (like a foyer) or directly over a dining table?
  3. Enter Dimensions:
    • For rooms, enter the Length and Width of the room.
    • For tables, enter the Length and Width of the table.
  4. Enter Ceiling Height:Measure from the floor to the highest point of the ceiling where the fixture will hang.
  5. Calculate:Get the recommended diameter,fixture height,and hanging position instantly.

Chandelier Rules of Thumb

Selecting the right chandelier size is as much about balance as it is about light. Follow these professional standards to ensure your fixture doesn't overwhelm or disappear in your room.

  • Diameter: For rooms, add Length (ft) + Width (ft) = Diameter (inches). For a 12'x16' room, a 28" fixture is perfect.
  • Height: A fixture should be roughly 2.5 to 3 inches tall for every foot of ceiling height. A 10-foot ceiling can support a fixture 25-30 inches tall.
  • Table Clearance: Fixtures should be 12 inches narrower than the table width to prevent guests from bumping their heads when standing up.
  • Foyer/Open Space: Always maintain at least 7 feet of clearance from the floor to the bottom of the fixture to allow people to walk underneath safely.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my room features a slanted or vaulted ceiling?

For slanted ceilings, you need a lighting fixture with a swivel mount or a flexible chain. Measure the ceiling height at the exact point where the chandelier will be installed. While using our calculator as a baseline sizing guide, you may want to choose a slightly larger fixture to ensure the proportion and scale feel right within the massive vertical volume created by a high vault.

Should the chandelier be centered based on room dimensions or over the table?

In a formal dining room, the fixture should almost always be centered directly over the dining table, even if the furniture isn't perfectly centered within the room. This anchors the space, ensures proper clearance for guests, and creates a beautiful focal point.

Can a chandelier be too bright for a room?

Yes. To prevent harsh lighting, look for fixture options with dimmable capabilities or use lower-wattage bulbs. A dimmer switch is highly recommended for dining room setups so you can adjust the ambiance to match the scale of your event.

How do I determine the right width and size for a kitchen island?

For a kitchen island,it's common to use pendant lighting or a linear chandelier. A linear fixture should be no longer than 2/3 the length of the island to maintain proper proportion. If using multiple pendants, space them roughly 30 inches apart and leave at least 6 inches of clearance from the edge of the counter to prevent bumping heads.

What size chandelier do I need for a two-story foyer or grand entryway?

In a two-story foyer, the hanging height is crucial: the fixture should be hung so the bottom is at least 8 to 9 feet from the floor, and preferably level with the second story if there is a window. For the ideal diameter, use the standard room dimensions formula in our calculator, but don't be afraid to size up slightly to accommodate the massive vertical height of the space.

Does the shape of my table matter when choosing a chandelier?

Yes! Round or square tables look best with round, square,or bowl-shaped lighting. Long rectangular or oval tables are often complemented by linear, rectangular,or oval-shaped fixtures that beautifully mirror the table's proportion and width.

How heavy can my chandelier be?

Standard ceiling electrical boxes are usually rated for lighting fixtures up to 50 pounds. If the scale of your calculated size leads to a piece heavier than 50 pounds, you must install a heavy-duty mounting box or brace that connects directly to the ceiling joists to ensure safe clearance and support.

Can I hang a chandelier in a bathroom?

Yes,but you must follow strict local building codes regarding clearance. Generally, the hanging height of a fixture must be at least 8 feet above the highest edge of the bathtub,or 3 feet away horizontally,to prevent electrical hazards in wet environments.

Does the style of the lighting affect its perceived scale and size?

Absolutely. A visually "heavy" chandelier with dark metals and thick shades will feel larger than a "light" glass or crystal fixture of the exact same dimensions. If your room is small but you want a larger diameter to match our sizing guide, opt for an airy,open-cage design that maintains proper proportion without overwhelming the space.
