How chandelier sizing works
Interior designers follow a simple "inch-for-foot" rule:the sum of your room's length and width in feet should equal the chandelier's diameter in inches. For placement over tables,the fixture should typically be 1/2 to 2/3 the width of the table surface.
Calculate chandelier size by adding room length and width in feet,then convert that sum to inches. Use that number as the chandelier diameter. For example,a 12 ft by 14 ft room needs a 26-inch chandelier. Hang it 30–36 inches above tables or 7 feet above floors.

Chandelier Rules of Thumb
Selecting the right chandelier size is as much about balance as it is about light. Follow these professional standards to ensure your fixture doesn't overwhelm or disappear in your room.
- Diameter: For rooms, add Length (ft) + Width (ft) = Diameter (inches). For a 12'x16' room, a 28" fixture is perfect.
- Height: A fixture should be roughly 2.5 to 3 inches tall for every foot of ceiling height. A 10-foot ceiling can support a fixture 25-30 inches tall.
- Table Clearance: Fixtures should be 12 inches narrower than the table width to prevent guests from bumping their heads when standing up.
- Foyer/Open Space: Always maintain at least 7 feet of clearance from the floor to the bottom of the fixture to allow people to walk underneath safely.
