How the marathon pace calculator works
Pace is time divided by distance. Race time is pace multiplied by distance, and average speed is distance divided by time.
A marathon pace calculator calculates the running pace needed to finish a marathon in a specific time. Enter a target finish time to calculate the required pace per mile or kilometer. For example, a 4-hour marathon requires an average pace of about 9:09 per mile or 5:41 per kilometer.

Stop-time allowance
How aid-station time changes required moving pace
Official finish time normally includes every second spent slowing, walking, or stopping. If a four-hour goal includes planned non-running time, subtract that delay before dividing by 42.195 km. The resulting moving pace must be faster than the overall 5:41/km average.

Estimate marathon time from a shorter race
A recent shorter race can provide a more grounded starting point than choosing a marathon goal in isolation. The Riegel-style projection below increases time slightly as distance grows to account for reduced sustainable speed.

Interpret cautiously: use a recent race completed at representative effort. The projection can be optimistic when marathon-specific endurance, long-run preparation, fueling, recovery, or course conditions are weaker than the shorter result suggests.

How do I calculate marathon pace in either distance unit?

How accurate is a marathon finish-time prediction for race day?
The arithmetic is exact if the entered pace is maintained across the full distance. The race-day prediction is only as realistic as the target and the endurance demonstrated in recent training performance. A pace taken from one short workout may not account for the course profile, heat, wind, congestion, stops, or late-race fatigue.
Should every race segment use exactly the same split pace?
Not necessarily. The calculator’s split plan is an even-pacing baseline. Hills, weather, aid stations, and race strategy can justify faster or slower individual splits. Aim to keep overall effort and cumulative time aligned with a realistic plan.
Does marathon pace include water and fueling stops?
Yes, when the goal is based on official finish time. The clock continues during aid-station stops. If you expect to spend several minutes walking or standing, your moving pace must be faster than the average pace displayed for the complete race. When pursuing a personal record, include those expected seconds in the plan.
