Informative ring size conversion
Ring sizes are small differences: A fraction of a millimeter can move you from one size to the next, so careful measurement matters.
How it works: A ring size calculator determines ring size by measuring finger circumference or ring diameter, then comparing the measurement with standard US, UK or EU sizing charts.
EU sizes are based on circumference: A European size 54 is approximately a 54 mm inside circumference. US and UK systems use different scales.
For valuable rings: Use this calculator as a guide, then confirm with a jeweler or a physical ring sizer before ordering.

How to use the ring size calculator
- Choose what you know: Enter inner diameter, finger circumference, US size or EU size.
- Measure carefully: For diameter, measure the inside of a ring that fits. For circumference, measure around the intended finger.
- Select the unit: Use millimeters for best accuracy, or inches if that is what your ruler provides.
- Consider band width: Wide rings can feel tighter, so the calculator gives a practical note.
- Confirm before buying: Use a jeweler, ring mandrel or physical sizer for high-value purchases.
Ring size formula
Ring size conversion starts with two measurements: inner diameter and inner circumference. Circumference is the distance around the inside of the ring.
EU ring size is commonly close to the inside circumference in millimeters. US and UK systems use different scales, so a chart is needed for conversion.
Circumference = diameter × π
Diameter = circumference ÷ π
EU size ≈ circumference in mm
After calculating the measurement, the calculator finds the closest standard size in the conversion table.

Example ring size calculation
Suppose the inside diameter of a ring that fits well is 17.3 mm. Multiply the diameter by π to estimate the inside circumference.

If the ring is a wide band or your finger tends to swell, you may want to confirm the next half size with a jeweler.
How to measure ring size accurately
The most reliable home method is to measure the inside diameter of a ring that already fits the same finger. Measuring around a finger with string can work, but it is easier to pull too tightly or stretch the material.
Most calculators use millimeters because small changes matter. For accurate ring sizing, measure at room temperature, since finger size can change by 0.5 to 1 full size during temperature shifts or swelling.
Measure at normal temperature
Cold fingers can be smaller and warm fingers can swell, so avoid measuring right after exercise or in extreme temperatures.
Use the intended finger
The same finger on different hands can be different sizes, so measure the exact finger that will wear the ring.
Check the knuckle
A ring should pass over the knuckle with slight resistance and sit comfortably without spinning too much.
Ring size systems explained
Jewelry stores often show ring size in different systems. Use this section to identify what a size label means before converting it in the calculator.
| Sizing system | How it appears | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| US / Canada | Numbers such as 6, 6.5, 7 or 8.25. | Look for half or quarter sizes if the store offers precise fitting. |
| UK / Australia | Letters such as L, M, N, O or P. | Letters can include half steps, so compare with diameter or circumference. |
| EU / ISO style | Numbers such as 52, 54, 57 or 60. | These usually track inside circumference in millimeters. |
| Diameter listing | Measurements such as 17.3 mm or 0.68 in. | Enter the value as inner diameter and let the calculator find the nearest size. |
Why ring measurements give different results
If two measurements do not match, the issue is usually the measuring method, finger condition or ring shape. This quick diagnostic table helps you decide what to repeat.
String gives a smaller size
The string may have been pulled into the skin. Repeat with a paper strip or flexible tape and keep it snug, not tight.
Diameter and circumference disagree
The ring may be slightly oval or the ruler may not cross the exact center. Measure the widest inside span and repeat from another angle.
Morning and evening sizes differ
Fluid retention and temperature can change finger size. Use the most common comfortable measurement, not an extreme reading.
Knuckle is larger than the finger base
Choose a size that passes the knuckle with light resistance but does not spin excessively once seated at the base.
Ring buying and resizing checklist
Before ordering online, save the measurements used for the result and check whether the ring design can be resized. This is especially important for expensive, engraved or stone-set bands.
Save the measurement
Record diameter, circumference, sizing system, finger, hand and measurement date so you can compare later if the fit changes.
Check the ring style
Plain metal bands are usually easier to resize than eternity rings, patterned bands, tension settings or rings with stones around the shank.
Review the return policy
If the ring is custom, engraved or made to order, confirm exchange and resizing options before choosing a borderline size.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate ring size from diameter?
Measure the inside diameter of a ring in millimeter values, then compare it to a ring size chart. If your ruler shows inch marks, convert the measurement first. The calculator also multiplies diameter by π to estimate circumference and find the nearest standard size.
Is EU ring size the same as circumference?
EU ring size is commonly close to the inside circumference in millimeters. For example, an EU 54 ring is approximately 54 mm around the inside. A conversion guide is still useful because US, UK and EU charts can vary slightly by jewelry brand.
Should I size up for a wide ring?
Often, yes. A wide band covers more of the finger and can feel tighter than a thin ring. Many people check the next half size for a more comfortable fit, especially with bands around 6 mm or wider.
Why do ring size charts differ?
Different countries use different sizing systems, and jewelry brands may round measurements differently. That is why a ring size calculator should be treated as a close estimate rather than a perfect substitute for professional sizing.
Can I measure ring size with string?
Yes, but it is less reliable. String and paper can stretch, twist or pull too tightly. If you use this method, measure more than once, avoid pulling the string into the skin and compare the result with a printable template or physical ring sizer when possible.
What if I am between two ring sizes?
If you are between sizes, consider the ring style, finger shape, knuckle size and climate. A jeweler can help decide whether the smaller or larger size is safer for that specific ring, especially when the band is wide or hard to resize.
Can my ring size change during the day?
Yes. Finger size can change with temperature, salt intake, exercise and normal swelling. For a more dependable result, measure more than once at room temperature and avoid sizing your finger when your hands are very cold or unusually warm.
How can I measure ring size without an existing ring?
Measure the finger circumference with a flexible measuring tape, or wrap a narrow strip of paper around the finger and mark where it overlaps. Then measure the strip in millimeters and enter that value in the calculator as circumference. A printed sizing template or reusable sizer can make the measurement easier to repeat.
Is the same ring size used for every finger?
No. Ring size can vary between fingers and even between the left and right hand. Always measure the exact finger and hand where the ring will be worn, especially for a wedding ring, engagement ring or any ring that cannot be resized easily.
